What are Lairs in World of Warcraft?
Midnight Season 2 introduced a new type of instance designed for a single group of 15 to 25 players, as well as for 5 to 40 players via the World difficulty queue. Lair is intended to replace lag-heavy open-world bosses with a separate instance for a limited number of players. The new mini-raid features a single boss that can be defeated on the following difficulties: World difficulty, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic.
Access to the Lair is open to all WoW subscribers by default, without the need to complete introductory quests or farm specific items. When selecting the desired difficulty level, the game displays a recommended minimum ilvl, though meeting this requirement is not mandatory for entry. Defeating a boss in this instance counts as one raid boss kill toward the Great Vault.
Midnight Season 2 Lair Boss

The first lair, Tidebound Grotto, was released in Midnight Season 2. The boss of this instance is Nymrissa Wavecaller; in terms of difficulty, she is comparable to standard raid bosses.
Tidebound Grotto Lair Strategy
Nymrissa Wavecaller in Tidebound Grotto requires single-target attacks to quickly burn down the enemy. A small number of Murloc adds will also require attention, though the entire party does not need to focus on them. Bloodlust is used on the pull for this boss. Depending on the difficulty of the lair, certain boss abilities also change or are added.
Experienced players on tank roles can solo this boss without needing a partner. The key mechanic present across all difficulty levels is Water Jet; before it casts, the tank must turn the boss away from the rest of the party to prevent them from taking splash damage. On Mythic difficulty, this mechanic must be moved to the icy patches on the platform left by Frost Orbs in order to clear the battlefield of unwanted damage and the hindrance caused by sliding.
For DPS and healers, key targets include the Bubblefin Shorerunners that start running toward the Alluring Bubble after the boss casts it. It is essential to clear out all – or as many as possible – of these Murlocs, because the bubble will subsequently be popped by Swirling Whirlpools; these deal damage but also significantly buff any adds within their area of effect. On Mythic difficulty, all players except the tank must prioritize killing Bubblefin Frostscale, who grants the other adds 99% immunity to all damage.
Healers must hold onto their AoE heals for specific mechanics. This applies primarily to the early phases: Alluring Bubble deals damage and knocks all players back, while Swirling Whirlpools can appear in inconvenient locations, necessitating group-wide healing. The second particularly dangerous mechanic is Abyssal Rain, which may require both group and personal defensive cooldowns.
To avoid the boss’s rage phase – during which Nymrissa Wavecaller casts Unending Tides, an AoE ability dealing massive Frost damage – it is essential to maintain high damage uptime across the tank, DPS, and healers. Additionally, using crowd-control abilities on the Murloc adds is useful for slowing their advance toward the bubble. You can also find additional information regarding specific damage values and detailed descriptions of each of the boss’s abilities in the wide Wowhead database.
Nymrissa Wavecaller Boss Loot
The new type of lair is also an integral part of endgame progression, as it offers the chance to obtain unique gear items exclusive to that specific instance. You cannot obtain tier set pieces from the boss Nymrissa Wavecaller; however, this does not diminish the value of the items you can acquire for your character. We have listed all the available items below:
| Item | Slot and Type |
| Cincture of the Abyssal Grotto | Cloth Waist |
| Tidebound Sorcereress’s Robes | Cloth Chest |
| Coiled Hex Legguards | Leather Legs |
| Breakwater Boots | Leather Feet |
| Rising Tide Wristguards | Mail Wrist |
| Grips of Swirling Fury | Mail Hands |
| Swelling Sea Spaulders | Plate Shoulders |
| Forgotten Grotto Girdle | Plate Waist |
| Tidepiercer’s Bubble Popper | Two-Hand Staff |
| Frostscale’s Mystic Frond | Off-Hand Weapon |
| Bubblefin Splash Guard | Shield |
| Alluring Bubbleband | Ring |
| Wavecaller’s Seastone | Trinket |
The item level of boss loot also scales with the selected instance difficulty. In addition to gear, you can also obtain a certain amount of Mistcrest needed for gear upgrades.
| Lair Difficulty | Loot Ilvl |
| World | 279 (Veteran 1/6) |
| Normal | 292 (Champion 1/6) |
| Heroic | 305 (Hero 1/6) |
| Mythic | 318 (Myth 1/6) |
If these items interest you, but the prospect of running Lair on higher difficulties and the need for a coordinated team puts you off, a WoW carry service can help. Boosthive has cleared Tidebound Grotto on all difficulties, including Mythic, and is ready to help you farm the lair without requiring you to master mechanics or understand encounter timers.
Tidebound Grotto Lair rewards
Unlike standard raids, Lairs do not yet feature special game achievements like Glory and are of interest only to achievement point collectors. Among the achievements you can earn in Tidebound Grotto are:
- Nymrissa Wavecaller – defeat Nymrissa Wavecaller on any difficulty;
- Heroic: Nymrissa Wavecaller – defeat Nymrissa Wavecaller on Heroic difficulty;
- Mythic: Nymrissa Wavecaller – defeat Nymrissa Wavecaller on Mythic difficulty;
- Nymrissa Wavecaller Guild Run – defeat Nymrissa Wavecaller on Normal difficulty or higher while in a guild group;
- Heroic: Nymrissa Wavecaller Guild Run – defeat Nymrissa Wavecaller on Heroic difficulty while in a guild group;
- Mythic: Nymrissa Wavecaller Guild Run – defeat Nymrissa Wavecaller on Mythic difficulty while in a guild group.
Another major difference compared to raids is the absence of standout cosmetic items or mounts – with the exception of the large Clumped Asteroidea housing decoration, which consists of a cluster of starfish. This decorative item requires a roll and drops on all difficulty levels of the Tidebound Grotto Lair.
